Skies are mostly cloudy early on this Friday morning and an Arctic cold front is moving through the area with some scattered flurries. Early temperatures range from 29 in Clifton down to 17 at High Point. Winds have become gusty from the northwest.

Arctic air will be in our area today with temperatures falling into the teens by later this morning and to the single digits by late tonight. Winds gusting to 35 mph will make the wind chills fall to well below zero. Skies will become sunny.

Another bitterly cold day on Saturday but with diminishing winds.

A southwesterly flow will bring considerably milder air for Sunday along with partly sunny skies.

Much of next week will be dry and mild. A couple of weak fronts may give us a slight to low chance of showers Wednesday or Thursday.

TUESDAY – FEB 7 – Partly sunny, high near 50.

WEDNESDAY – FEB 8 – Mostly sunny, high in the low 50s.

MARINE FORECAST: A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for northwest winds gusting to 35 knots, seas 3-6 feet. Freezing spray.

OUTLOOK: A gale warning has been issued effective between 6 p.m. this evening through 4 a.m. Saturday morning with freezing spray; small craft advisories still expected Saturday through Sunday evening; no advisories expected later Sunday night through Monday night; advisories possible on Tuesday.

High pressure will be moving through the area and off the coast by tonight. Today will be a partly sunny day with near seasonable temperatures.

The Arctic cold front is expected to move through the area before sunrise on Friday. The front will be followed by a strong northwest flow of extremely cold air. Highs will only be in the 20s and with winds gusting over 35 mph will bring wind chill values to fall to below zero.

Very cold air will continue to be with us on Saturday, early temperatures will be in the single digits with below zero readings further inland. Winds will be brisk in the morning but slowly diminsh in the afternoon.

Fortunately the brutal cold weather will not last long as Sunday will be considerable milder along with partly sunny skies.

Continued quite mild much of next week and staying mainly dry.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY 2023 – (Records go back to 1973)

WARMEST JANUARY ON RECORD!

The average temperature for the month was 41.4 smashing the previous record by more than 2 degrees and was around 10 degrees above normal. The highest temperature was 68 on the 4th with the lowest temperature fell to only 25 degrees which also smashed the record for the highest monthly minimum temperatures. Precipitation was above normal with 5.32″. Snowfall was well below average with only 0.5″. So far this season only 0.9: of snow accumulated which is the lowest since the 1994-1995 winter season.

Light snow is falling over much of the area with a dusting on the ground. Temperatures are the coldest since December 26th but actually near normal with readings ranging from 23 in Clifton down to 17 at High Point, Winds are from the north averaging 5-10 mph.

RECORD HIGH: 63 – 1989 RECORD LOW: 6 – 2019  We had 19″ of snow in 2021.

YESTERDAY’S HIGH: 46 LOW: 28 PRECIPITATION: .08″ SNOW: 0.1″

The weak disturbance that is giving us a dusting of snow will be moving away and the snow should end shortly after sunrise. Gradual clearing by this afternoon with seasonably cold temperatures.

Slightly milder on Thursday ahead of an Arctic front.

The Arctic front will move through our area Friday morning with a strong northwest flow of bitterly cold air. Temperatures will remain in the 20s during the day and with winds gusting to 35 mph will make it feel well below zero. Low temperatures will fall to the single digits Saturday morning with below zero readings further inland. During the day Saturday it will be sunny but highs will only reach the low to mid 20s.

The very cold air will not last that long as Sunday will reach well up into the 40s.

Back to above normal temperatures next week with no major storms expected.
