Skies are mostly cloudy to cloudy early on this Labor Day morning and once again it is warm and humid with temperatures at 5 a.m. ranging from 70 in Clifton down to 64 at High Point. Winds are mainly calm and the humidity is high with dew points in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.

A slow moving front will be in our area today giving us mostly cloudy skies with a chance of showers during the day. Showers will become more widespread and may be heavy at times tonight. High temperatures today will be lower than yesterday but it will remain humid.

Well needed soaking rain is likely mainly Tuesday morning as the front will still be in our area. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are likely with higher amounts possible. A flood watch is in effect.

Still a chance of showers on Wednesday but if any rain falls it will be much lighter than on Tuesday.

High pressure will then build into our area providing our area with dry conditions Thursday through next weekend with seasonably mild temperatures.

Winds are mainly calm or light southerly and it is moderately humid with dew points in the 60s.

Today will be a warm and humid day as high pressure moves offshore and a cold front was to our north and west. There is a chance of some afternoon and evening showers and possibly some thunderstorms. High temperatures will be well up into the 80s with dew points in the upper 60s.

Significant well needed rainfall is now expected with showers heavy at times with some thunderstorms especially from Monday evening through Tuesday. Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are expected. With the cloudy cover and an onshore wind high temperatures will be near 80 on Monday and only in the mid 70s on Tuesday but it will be humid with dew points in the mid to upper 60s. A slow moving cold front will be in our area.

At this time Wednesday through the beginning of next weekend should be dry but some models show a possible disturbance along the front to our south that would give us lingering showers Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will be near normal Wednesday and Thursday and rise to above normal Friday and Saturday.

High pressure moving off the New England coast will give us a dry day today with temperatures a couple of degrees higher than yesterday and the dew point will rise to the low-mid 60s.

Very warm and humid on Sunday as the high will be off the coast and a cold front approaches our area. There will be a chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.

The front will be in our area Monday and Tuesday with showers likely with some heavy rain possible which would help with our drought conditions.

High pressure building over our area will give us abundant sunshine today, high will be slightly lower than yesterday along with continued comfortable humidity and the winds will be lighter than yesterday.

High pressure will move off the coast on Saturday but we should remain dry with only a slight increase in humidity.

Sunday will be a warmer and more humid day ahead of a cold front, there is a chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.

With the front in the area showers are likely on Labor Day with cooler temperatures but still on the humid side.

The front will slowly disipate through the week with still a chance of showers on Tuesday followed by drier air Wednesday and Thursday. High temperatures will be slightly below normal on Tuesday but rise to slightly above normal through the rest of next week.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR AUGUST 2022

The average temperature for the month was 79.0 degrees which was well above normal and it was the warmest August since my records began in 1973. We had a record 17 days of 90 degrees or higher for the month. The highest temperature was 97 degrees set on the 4th, 8th and 9th. The lowest temperature was 60 on the 14th. It was the 10th driest August with only 1.93″ accumulating. Note: The period from August 21st through Sep 2nd only 1.14″ of rain this year while the same period last year we recorded 15.19″ of rain mainly due to Hurricanes Henri and Ida.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS

High pressure will build into the area today to start meteorological fall and provide our area with sunny skies, warm temperatures and low humidity along with a nice breeze.

High pressure will continue to give us nice weather Friday and Saturday with plenty of sunshine again both days with seasonably warm temperatures and low humidity.

A front will move toward the area on Sunday as high pressure moves off the coast, temperatures will rise to well up into the 80s and with dew points in the upper 60s it will be a muggy day. There is a chance of mainly late day showers.

Shower chances increase for Labor Day as the front will be in our area, temperatures will be not as warm but the humidity will remain rather high.
