Skies are partly cloudy early on this Martin Luther King Day and temperatures are quite cold again ranging from the low teens in the Clifton area to some single digits further inland, winds are from the north averaging 5-10 mph.

Today we should see an increase in clouds as a strong Arctic high pressure moves off the New England coast, once again it will be quite cold with afternoon highs only reaching the upper 20s, winds should be less than the last few days.

A weak disturbance moving into the area will likely give us some light snow Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday morning, accumulations should average around an inch or two.

Dry weather on Thursday with seasonably cold temperatures.

Dry weather to continue Friday through the weekend with a warming trend.

TUESDAY – JAN 16 – Cloudy with light snow likely mainly after 3 p.m. high in the mid 30s.

WEDNESDAY – JAN 17 – A chance of snow mainly before 8 a.m. then partial clearing, high in the mid 30s, total snow accumulation 1-2 inches.

THURSDAY – JAN 18 – Mostly sunny, high in the mid 30s.

FRIDAY – JAN 19 – Mostly sunny, high near 40.

SATURDAY – JAN 20 – Mostly sunny, high in the mid 40s.

SUNDAY – JAN 21 – Partly sunny, high near 50.

MARINE FORECAST:  A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning for northeast winds gusting to 25 knots, seas 4-6 feet.

OUTLOOK – No advisories expected Tuesday through the day on Wednesday;  possible small craft conditions Wednesday night through Thursday night; no advisories expected on Friday.

SUNDAY  JANUARY 14, 2018  5:45 A.M.

The area has mostly clear skies early on this Sunday morning and temperatures are quite cold ranging from the low teens in the Clifton area down to some single digits above zero further inland, winds are gusty out of the northwest.

Today we will enjoy plenty of sunshine but it will be very cold again today but with a little less wind than on Saturday,  highs will be in the upper 20s.  Arctic high pressure over the upper midwest will dominate our weather.

Another very cold day on Monday as the Arctic high will move eastward to near Maine, however the winds will be lighter.

A weak disturbance on Tuesday may give us some snow showers but with slightly milder air moving in the snow may mix with rain in the afternoon, little or no accumulation is expected.

Another disturbance will give us a chance of snow once again on Wednesday but at this time it appears that the low pressure will be weak and further offshore, still something to watch.

Thursday will be quite cold and dry.

Milder Friday through the weekend and we should remain dry.

Looking ahead for what is worth indicates that above normal temperatures will be with us the last part of this month into early February.

SATURDAY  JANUARY 13, 2018  5:54 A.M.

A strong cold front has just moved to our east and temperatures are beginning to fall rapidly from the 50s into the 40s in Clifton and has fallen to the low 30s further inland, winds have become gusty out of the northwest.

The front will move further offshore as a cold Arctic high pressure over the upper Great Plains states build eastward.  We should see rapid clearing with temperatures falling into the 20s by sunset, winds will be gusty.

Very cold start to the day on Sunday with overnight lows tonight falling to around 10, winds will slowly diminish.  Skies will be mostly clear.

Still very cold on Monday with lighter winds.

A couple of disturbances moving into the area will give the area a chance of light snow on Tuesday and another chance of snow on Wednesday, temperatures will not be as cold.

Colder again on Thursday with a moderating trend Friday through next weekend.

FRIDAY  JANUARY 12, 2018  5:50 A.M.

Skies are cloudy early on this Friday morning and there are patches of fog along with scattered showers in the area.   Temperatures range from the upper 40s here in Clifton down around 40 in some inland valleys but up to the mid 50s further inland, Walpack now is at 56 degrees which is about 70 degrees warmer than the early morning temperature on Sunday morning.

Today we will have periods of rain heavy at times especially this afternoon and evening as a frontal system approaches from the west, temperatures will rise to near 60 on southerly winds. Rainfall amounts will average 1 1/2 to 2 inches.

The front will pass through in the morning followed by much colder air, some of the precipitation will end in the morning as a mixture of rain, freezing rain and sleet mostly over inland areas.  Temperatures in the 50s before sunrise will drop to the 30s by late morning, much colder at night with lows dropping to the teens.

Dry and cold Sunday and Monday.

An Alberta clipper moving into the area on Tuesday may give us some accumulating snow into Wednesday morning.

Quite cold and dry later Wednesday into Thursday.

Milder air will move in for next Friday into the weekend.

THURSDAY  JANUARY 11, 2018  5:46 A.M.

Skies are mostly cloudy early on this Thursday morning and temperatures are mild ranging from the mid 30s here in Clifton down to around 30 further inland, winds are mainly calm.

High pressure moving off the coast will give us a southweesterly flow of milder air today, temperatures will rise to around 50 despite considerable cloudiness.

A frontal system slowly approaching from the west will cause rain to develop after midnight tonight, overnight temperatures will be steady with lows around 50.

Very mild but with rain on Friday, the rain may be heavy at times.  Colder air will filter in behind the front on Saturday and the precipitation may end as a period of sleet and freezing rain well inland.  Total rainfall around 1 1/2 to 2 inches possible.

Much colder Saturday night through the middle of next week although not as frigid as what we experienced earlier this month.   There is a chance of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning but at this time accumulations should be on the light side.
