With clear skies and light winds temperatures range to around 10 in the Clifton area to some below zero readings in the normally colder areas, Walpack in Sussex County has fallen to -7 degrees.

Today a southerly flow will develop around a departing high pressure offshore and temperatures should rise into the upper 30s, skies will start out mostly sunny but clouds will increase as the day goes on.

A winter storm watch is in effect for snow that will begin Sunday afternoon and last into at least Monday morning.  The latest computer models now has the heaviest snowfall amounts just to our south across Central and Southern New Jersey where up to 10 inches can be expected, less snow as you travel north with up to 8 inches in the Clifton area and 4 inches across the extreme northern areas of Northern New Jersey.  These amounts are far from being etched in stone and will probably change.

Much below normal temperatures Tuesday into Wednesday morning with somewhat milder temperatures as we approach next weekend. However another storm may affect the area by next weekend with rain or snow.

The forecast:  Today – Increasing cloudiness, not as cold, high in the mid-upper 30s.

Tonight – Mostly cloudy, low in the mid 20s.

Sunday – Cloudy with snow developing mainly after 3pm, high in the mid 30s. Snow continuing at night.

Monday – Snow ending around noon, total possible accumulations 6-8 inches, high only in the mid 20s.

Tuesday – Mostly sunny, high in the upper 20s.

Wednesday – Mostly sunny, high around 30.

Thursday – Partly sunny, high in the low 30s.

Friday – Mostly cloudy, high near 40.

Marine forecast: Today – Winds becoming southerly up to 9 knots, seas 1 foot.

Outlook:  Advisories likely Sunday night into Tuesday and still possible Wednesday into Thursday.

The temperature at 6am in Clifton is only 5 degrees, which is a record for the date and the coldest reading this month.  Winds have diminished from last night but wind chill readings are still well below zero.

Today despite plenty of sunshine temperatures will have a hard time reaching the 20 degree mark.  Tonight will be clear with mainly calm winds so temperatures will again fall to the single digits especially inland.

Temperatures will moderate on Saturday to the 30s which is still well below normal for the first day of March.

An Arctic cold front will be moving to our south on Sunday and we have a chance of light snow with this front during the day.

Low pressure will be moving along this front and snow will develop on Sunday night and continue through Monday evening, still too early to pinpoint amounts but a foot or more of snow is not out of the question.

Dry weather next Tuesday through Thursday with much below normal temperatures continuing.

Looking at the longer range models it appears that we will stay quite cold through the middle of March with still more chances of snow.  Maybe we have to burn that shower curtain.

With clear skies and light winds temperatures have fallen to the upper single digits in the Clifton area to even some below zero readings in the normally colder areas.

Today temperatures will rise to the low 30s but another cold front be crossing through this afternoon accompanied by some scattered snow showers that may give us a coating of snow.  Winds will increase this afternoon with some gusts up to 30 MPH.

Behind this front a reinforcing surge of Arctic air will cover the area tonight with record low temperatures with readings well down in the single digits, wind chills will fall to well below zero.

On Friday despite “significant” sunshine temperatures will only rise to the mid 20s.

Dry and not quite as frigid Saturday through most of the day on Sunday.

A winter storm will affect the area Sunday night through Monday night, still too early to pinpoint snow amounts as what falls may be mixed with sleet, rain and freezing rain.  At any rate be prepared for some travel problems.

Much below temperatures will continue to at least the middle of next week.

At daybreak this morning skies are cloudy and temperatures range from the low 20s in the Clifton area to the teens and even some single digits in Sussex County, there are some snow showers falling in parts of the area mainly to our south.

Snow showers are likely mainly this morning and we may see a coating to an inch of accumulation, skies will clear by this afternoon.  Much colder tonight with lows dropping down to near 10 degrees.

Some more scattered snow showers are possible on Thursday and it will be windy and cold.

Friday will be very cold with early morning lows in the single digits and highs only in the 20s despite plenty of sunshine.

Saturday will be dry but not as cold.

I think the removal of the winter shower curtain will be getting a  real test Sunday into Monday as a winter storm is likely.  Precipitation is likely to begin on Sunday as a mixture of rain and snow but as colder air moves in from the north the precipitation should change to all snow Sunday night into Monday with significant accumulations quite possible.

Much colder this morning than yesterday with early morning temperatures mainly in the teens, skies are mostly clear.

Today we will have a mix of clouds and sun, temperatures will be a few degrees lower than yesterday but will less wind. There is an outside chance of a snow flurry.

Only some snow showers expected late tonight into Wednesday morning as a cold front moves through the area, accumulations of less than an inch can be expected, a bit more across the southern part of New Jersey.

Thursday and Friday will be dry but very cold especially on Friday when lows may dip into the single digits and highs only in the 20s.

Cold again for the weekend with only a chance of light snow on Saturday.

A stronger storm is expected next Monday that could give us a chance of more substantial snow but maybe this threat will also lessen  as time goes on since the winter shower curtain is now down..
