Skies are cloudy early on this Thursday morning and temperatures are milder than this time yesterday with readings ranging from 35 in Clifton down to 28 at High Point. Winds are calm or light southwesterly. The air quality is good with an index of 48.

CLIFTON’S ALMANAC FOR JANUARY 4TH:

A cold front will swing through our area around noon preceded by cloudy skies and possibly a flurry or sprinkle. This front will be followed by a gusty northwest flow of colder air along with clearing skies.

Friday will be the calm before the storm with dry conditions, lighter winds and seasonably cold temperatures.

The coastal storm that we have been tracking will move into our area on Saturday with precipitation beginning in the afternoon and tapering off Sunday morning. The rain and snow line will be close to our area with areas to our east getting more rain and accumulations should be around an inch. Further to our north and west plowable snow is expected. My best guess now is for 2-4 inches in Clifton but that may change depending on the track and intensity of this coastal storm.

Monday will be a dry day with seasonably cool temperatures.

Another possible stronger storm is expected Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday, at the present time about 2 inches of precipitation is likely most if not all of it in the form of rain that potential will cause some river flooding as the ground will be quite saturated.

TUESDAY – JAN 9 – Cloudy with a chance of rain or snow in the morning becoming all rain in the afternoon becoming heavy at times through Tuesday night, highs in the mid 40s.

WEDNESDAY – JAN 10 – Chance of rain in the morning then becoming partly sunny in the afternoon, highs near 50.

MARINE FORECAST: A small craft advisory will be in effect from noon today through 7 a.m. Friday morning for northwest winds gusting to 30 knots, seas 3-5 feet.

High pressure continues to build into our area today giving us plenty of sunshine, light winds and high temperatures a couple of degrees higher than yesterday.

A cold front will come through on Thursday with only cloudy skies but there is a chance of some flurries or sprinkles from this system across northwest New Jersey. The front will then be followed by clearing and it will become windy and colder.

Friday looks to be a dry and chilly day with diminishing winds.

A coastal storm will likely give us our first measurable snow of the season Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Present indications that this storm could bring significant snow to our area with several inches likely. Of course accumulations will depend on the strength and track of the storm.

After a dry and cool Monday another storm will affect our area Tuesday and Wednesday but this time the storm will stay to our west and just give us rain. Some of the rain may be heavy and with the ground saturated flooding is likely.

High pressure centered over the Mississippi Valley will build into our area and dominate our weather through Wednesday with sunny skies both days, light winds and near normal temperatures.

A cold front will cross the area Thursday morning possibly accompanied by a brief rain or snow shower then followed by a brisk northwest flow of colder air.

Friday will be seasonably cold and dry.

Our first measurable snowfall of the season is likely beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday as a coastal low moves offshore and depending on the track will determine possible snow accumulations as a track closer to our area would give us more in the way of rain.

Dry and seasonably cold weather expected for next Monday and then another storm is expected to move through the Great Lakes on Tuesday, this time the precipitation should be in the form of rain.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY – RECORDS STARTED IN 1973.

DECEMBER 2023 was the second warmest December on record, (the warmest was in 2015). The average temperature was 41.9. The highest temperature was 61 recorded on the 2nd, 10th, 15th and the 18th. The lowest temperature was 21 on the 22nd. Precipitation totaled 9.48″ which was the second wettest December (the wettest was in 1983) The biggest storm was on the 17-18 when 4.55″ of rain was recorded causing major river flooding of the Passaic River. Snowfall was only a trace.

2023 was the warmest year on record since my records began in 1973. Precipitation was above normal with 60.08″ which was the 7th wettest. Snowfall was well below normal with only 7.6″ accumulating.

A weak front will cause mostly cloudy skies today with light winds, high temperatures will be in the low-mid 40s.

High pressure will give us dry conditions with continued slightly above normal temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.

A storm system is expected to develop well to our south and east on Thursday, so the day will be dry, but as the storm moves off the New England coast it will cause breezy and colder conditions Thursday night into Friday.

After a dry and chilly Saturday a storm system will likely give us rain or snow on Sunday. Too early to determine the path and strength of the storm but it is possible that we will have our first measurable snowfall of the season.

New Year’s Day will again be partly sunny with slightly above normal temperatures.

Dry weather with temperatures still a bit above normal for Tuesday and Wednesday.

A low pressure system will give us a chance of rain on Thursday but most of the precipitation should be to our south and east.

Dry, cooler and breezy Friday and Saturday as high pressure builds into the area.

Another low pressure may give us rain or snow next Sunday.
