Skies are cloudy early on this Sunday morning and most of the rain has moved to our south and east. Once again it is unseasonably mild with temperatures at 5 a.m. range from 51 in Clifton down to 47 at High Point, these readings are nearly 30 degrees above normal for this time of day. Winds are mainly calm.

Today will be a cloudy and mild day but most or all of the day with be dry. A cold front will cross the area this afternoon and the front will be followed by a brisk northwest flow of much colder air. A low pressure developing on the front will likely give snow across southern New Jersey with only a slight chance that the snow will move into our area.

Skies will become partly sunny on Monday but it will continue to be breezy and cold.

Tuesday will be cold but less harsh with mostly sunny skies.

Somewhat milder on Wednesday but a cold front will give us a chance of mainly rain showers.

Another low pressure system may give us rain or snow Thursday night into Friday.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY: RECORDS GO BACK TO 1973!

DECEMBER – Temperatures were well above normal and it was the second warmest December (warmest was in 2015) Highest temperature 65 on the 11th, the lowest was 21 degrees on the 20th. Precipitation was well below normal with 1.35″ and it was Clifton’s 4th driest December. Snowfall was well below normal with only 0.5″ falling on the morning of the 24th.

2021– Temperatures were well above normal and it was the 3rd warmest year since I started my records in 1973. Highest temperature was 99 recorded on June 30th, the lowest was 12 degrees 12 degrees set on February 18th. Precipitation was above normal and was the 6th wettest year 63.96″. Snowfall for the year totaled 40 inches which 35.5 of it accumulated in February. The top weather event was Hurricane Ida which caused massive floods with some deaths in our area.

A frontal system moving into the area today will give us rain mainly this afternoon and tonight, temperatures will be mild with highs in the 50s. Rainfall amounts of around 1 inch are expected. Temperatures tonight will remain in the mild 50s.

Chance of showers on Sunday as the front moves through our area in the afternoon followed by much colder air at night.

Monday and Tuesday will be chilly but dry as high pressure builds into our area.

Mainly dry Wednesday and during the day on Thursday with somewhat milder temperatures.

Low pressure will give our area a chance of rain or snow mainly from Thursday night through Friday morning.

Temperatures continue to be unseasonably warm with readings at 5 a.m. ranging from 47 in Clifton down to 44 at Walpack, these readings are nearly 25 degrees above normal. Winds are mainly calm.

Today will be a dry day and it will continue to be mild with highs in the 50s. Skies will be mainly cloudy but we may see some breaks in the clouds to give us some partial sunshine this afternoon. The temperature at midnight is expected to be near 48 degrees with cloudy skies.

A frontal system will give us rain on Saturday but temperatures will continue to be unseasonably mild.

A lower chance of showers on Sunday, again it will be unseasonably mild, but a cold front will cross the area in the afternoon. Temperatures in the 50s will fall to near freezing by midnight on Sunday.

Monday will be much colder and breezy with lows in the 20s and highs in the 30s which is near normal, but will feel frigid compared to the very mild air that we have had the last few days.

Mainly dry weather the rest of next week with a slow moderation in temperatures.

Skies are cloudy early on this Thursday morning and temperatures at 5 a.m. range from 41 in Clifton down to 37 at High Point, Vernon and Walpack. These temperatures are nearly 20 degrees above normal. There is some light rain or drizzle falling in parts of the area. Winds are mainly calm.

A weak front to our south will continue to give us cloudy skies with only a low chance of some light rain or drizzle but most of the time it will remain dry.

Friday looks to be dry with mild temperatures as a weak high pressure moves into the area. It should remain dry for New Year’s Eve festivities and the midnight temperature should be in the mid 40s.

A strong frontal system will be in our area on the weekend with rain likely from before dawn on New Year’s Day through Sunday night. Temperatures will be unseasonably mild but as the front moves through much colder air will move into our area and the precipitation may change to snow before ending early Monday morning. The GFS computer model is indicating some significant snowfall in our area while most of the other models has the precipitation ending before any accumulation in our area.

Monday will be cold and windy but temperatures will only be a few degrees below normal.

The cold air will be short lived as milder air will be moving in for Tuesday and Wednesday along with dry conditions.

Today will be a cloudy day and there is a low chance of some drizzle during the day as a weak warm front to our south slowly moves northward. Daytime highs will be in the 40s.

Thursday will again be cloudy and continued mild with a chance of light rain.

Friday still looks to be the best day of this week with dry conditions and highs in the 50s.

Significant rain is possible on New Year’s Day as a slow moving front approaches from the west, temperatures despite the rain and clouds should rise well up into the 50s.

The cold front will cross the area Sunday night preceded by some showers mostly in the morning, temperatures again will be mild but become much cooler after the frontal passage.

Dry and colder early next week but temperatures will only drop to near normal for early January.
