Dangerous Hurricane Sandy to hit New Jersey tonight!

As of 8am this morning Hurricane Sandy was about 300 miles south-southeast of our area and has started to turn northwest toward the New Jersey coast, maximum sustained winds are at 85 MPH with higher gusts. Little or no rain has fallen in Northern New Jersey but South Jersey very heavy rain has already occurred with over three inches reported in Cape May. Top winds so far in our area have ranged 30-35 MPH in gusts while the highest gusts in New Jersey was 50 MPH on Long Beach Island. Conditions will worsen this afternoon and especially this evening as gusts up 80 MPH are quite possible here. The rain in our part of the state will not be all that bad compared to Irene with rainfall totals around 3 inches, so inland flooding should not be much of an issue.. Coastal flooding is already occurring along the New Jersey coast and will get much worse especially the northern New Jersey coast and New York Harbor where record levels are likely with devastating results. As I posted yesterday New York subways may be out of service for up to two weeks. Again in our area the story will be the wind with frequent hurricane gusts later today and tonight causing massive power outages. By Tuesday morning after the storm moves onshore winds will slowly diminish but still gusting to 50 MPH, the rain will taper off to showers and continue through the day and night. Winds will lower further Tuesday night only gusting to 25 MPH at times. By Wednesday conditions will be much quieter with lighter winds and only some scattered showers. Mainly dry later this week into the weekend with seasonable temperatures with highs in the mid 50s and lows in the low to mid 40s..

The forecast: Today – Rain which will be heavy at times, winds gusting to 65 MPH by this afternoon, high near 60.
Tonight – Rain heavy at times, dangerous hurricane wind gusts to 75 MPH, low in the mid 50s.
Tuesday – Rain tapering off to showers by the afternoon – may have some sunshine in the afternoon, high in the low 60s, winds gust to 55 MPH in the morning slowly diminishing in the afternoon.
Tuesday night – mostly cloudy with further diminishing winds chance of a shower, low near 50.
Wednesday – Cloudy with a chance of a shower, wind gusts to 25 MPH, high in the upper 50s.
Thursday – Mostly cloudy, high in the mid 50s.
Friday – Partly sunny – high in the mid 50s.
Weekend – Mostly sunny, highs again in the mid 50s.

Marine Forecast: Today and Tuesday – Hurricane wind warning – northeast wind becoming southerly gusting to 75 knots, seas up to 30 feet.
Outlook: Small craft advisories will probably be needed through Friday.

Everyone please try to have a good day and stay safe!!!

Dangerous Hurricane Sandy to hit New Jersey tomorrow night!

One more day to prepare for one of the worst storms to ever hit this area! This morning Sandy was located about 250 miles to the South-southeast of Cape Hatteras North Carolina moving northward. During the day today the winds will pick up from the northeast but there will be little of no rainfall, gusts can reach 35 MPH by this evening. Heavy rain and with strong damaging winds will begin by mid-morning on Monday, gusts to 55 MPH. Monday night will be the worst part of the storm with gusts possibly as high as 80 MPH with very heavy rain. Sandy is expected to come ashore near Sandy Hook around 10PM Monday night, damaging winds and very heavy rain will persist into Tuesday morning before slowly diminishing on Tuesday afternoon. Please take this storm very seriously, power may be out for several days, coastal flooding is even a bigger concern as the storm surge along the coast will be nearly 8 feet, this kind of surge will devastate our coastal areas, New York City subways may be shut down for one to two weeks. I would just add if people are told to evacuate along our coast as well as coastal areas of New York City should leave, this is much more serious than Irene was last year.. Rainfall of 2-6″ is expected, and with the area having a rather dry summer inland flooding should not be as bad as with Irene. Rain and winds will taper off Tuesday evening with wind gusts down to 40 MPH. Wednesday will be breezy with rain showers and cooler temperatures. Cool and dry the end of next week..

The forecast: Today – Cloudy with a chance of rain showers this afternoon, winds increasing gusting to 35mph by this afternoon, high near 60.
Tonight – Rain showers likely, windy with gusts to 45MPH, low near 50.
Monday – Very heavy rain with damaging winds, gusts to 65MPH, high in the mid 50s.
Monday night – Very heavy rain with damaging winds, gusts to 75MPH, low holding in the mid 50s.
Tuesday – Very heavy rain and damaging winds mostly in the morning, gusts to 60MPH, slowly diminishing in the afternoon, high in the mid 50s.
Tuesday night – Mostly cloudy with rain showers likely, top wind gusts to 40MPH, cooler, low in the low 40s.
Wednesday – Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers, diminishing winds, gusts to 30MPH, high in the mid 50s.
Thursday – Mostly cloudy, high in the mid 50s.
Friday – Partly sunny, high again the mid 50s.

Marine forecast: Today – Storm warnings – Northeast winds gusting to 45 knots by evening, seas rising to 11 feet.
Outlook – Storm conditions through Tuesday – winds gusting to 70 knots, seas up to 20 feet, winds and seas slowly diminishing by mid-week but at least small craft advisory level conditions into Thursday..

People should finish preparations for the storm today.

Try to have a good day!

Calm before the storm!

Well as my daughter Jessica pointed out I was wrong with yesterday’s forecast of partly sunny as we were stuck with clouds all day as an easterly flow helped keep a low overcast all day.
I am hoping to be wrong with this dangerous storm that is approached but unfortunately that will not be the case.. This weekend is the time to prepare for possibly one of the worst storms in our lifetime. Today we may see a break of sunshine with mild temperatures, clouds will increase tonight along with a chance of light showers that will extend into Sunday. Winds and rain will gradually increase Sunday night. At 5am Sandy was downgraded to a tropical storm but don’t let that fool you this tropical storm combining with strong cold front approaching from the west will give us a extremely intense storm as it comes onshore, landfall right now is forecast to be on the New Jersey coast early on Tuesday morning. The strongest winds and heaviest rain will be from Monday morning till Tuesday midday. Hurricane force wind gust to 80 mph will be common over a large area causing widespread power outages . Torrential rains of up to 8 inches are possible, there is a chance that inland flooding will not be as severe as during Hurricane Irene due to the rather dry summer that we have had. Rain and wind will slowly diminish later on Tuesday. Still a chance of showers on Wednesday with some gusty winds but well below damaging levels. The rest of the week will be dry and cool.. This weekend is time to prepare for this unprecedented storm..

The forecast: Today – Mostly cloudy, high in the upper 60s.
Tonight – Chance of showers, cloudy, low in the mid 50s.
Sunday – Cloudy with a chance of rain, high in the low 60s.
Sunday night – Cloudy with rain developing, winds increasing with gusts to 30 mph.
Monday and Monday night – Torrential rains and damaging winds gusts to 80 mph, high in the mid 50s.
Tuesday – Torrential rains and damaging winds in the morning, diminishing slowly in the afternoon, gusts to 80 mph in the morning.
Tuesday night – Cloudy with diminishing winds, lighter rain still likely, cooler low in the low 40s.
Wednesday – Mostly cloudy, bit windy, high in the mid 50s.
Thursday – Mostly cloudy, high in the mid 50s.
Friday – Partly sunny, highs again in the mid 50s.

Marine forecast: Today – Small craft advisory, east-northeast winds increasing to 25 knots by evening, seas rising to 6 feet.
Outlook: Storm conditions Monday and Tuesday for northeast winds gusting to 75 knots, seas up to 22 feet..
Small craft advisory should be in effect into Wednesday then drop below advisory conditions Thursday and Friday.

Please leave a comment if you have any questions concerning this upcoming storm and try to enjoy the day!

Quiet couple of days before Sandy hits!

Today we finally will get some sun and mild temperatures and Saturday will also be pleasant but some light rain may develop by evening.
Sandy is moving north after passing the Bahamas, the 5am track of the storm has it coming onshore in the Delmarva area but some of the computer models have it a little further north into Long Island. Regardless of where it comes ashore the storm will affect our area with strong damaging winds, torrential rain and coastal and inland flooding, this is a serious storm and people should start preparing for some extremely bad weather especially from Monday night into Tuesday. The storm will be inland by Tuesday night and showers and cooler weather should prevail the rest of next week! Stay tuned…

The forecast: Today – Partly sunny, high near 70
Tonight – Partly cloudy, low in the low 50s.
Saturday – Partly sunny, high in the upper 60s, rain likely by evening.
Sunday – Rain likely, high in the low 60s.
Monday – Rain likely becoming windy, rain heavy at times, high in the upper 50ss
Tuesday – Heavy rain likely, damaging winds, high in the mid 50s
Wednesday – Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers, high in the low 50s.
Thursday – Partly sunny, high in the low 50s..

Marine Forecast: Today – East-southeast wind below 10 knots, seas 2 feet..
Outlook – Small craft advisory for building seas on Saturday, winds and seas increasing further on Sunday at lasting through at least Tuesday, Storm or hurricane warnings likely to be issued.

Start preparing for the worst and hope for the best!

Little or no sun again today while chances of Hurricane Sandy hitting our area have increased!

Mainly cloudy weather will continue today though the sun may peek through a bit this afternoon. Friday will have more sunshine and temperatures reaching the 70s. A cold front will cause more clouds and a chance of showers from Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Meanwhile in case you haven’t heard there is a more likely chance of a devastating storm affecting our area early next week. Most of the computer models now have Sandy hitting the area anywhere from the Chesapeake Bay area into Southern New England, the only model that has the storm going further offshore before moving back and hitting Maine is the American model (GFS). This is a very serious situation, this storm has the potential to be stronger than Irene last year. Hurricane force winds, torrential rain and coastal flooding is becoming more likely. This situation will become more clear tomorrow as more data is fed into the computer models. The National Weather Service are launching balloons four times a day instead of twice across the country to get more measurements of the upper air conditions. It may be a good idea to start to think about preparing for this potential historic storm. The eye of Sandy (the hurricane’s not Duncan’s) is located just off the coast and Cuba and will affect the Bahamas today and tomorrow then move north… Stay tuned for further updates…

The forecast: Today – Mostly cloudy, high in the mid 60s.
Tonight – Mostly cloudy, low in the low 50s.

Sunday – Cloudy with a chance of rain, high in the low 60s

Tuesday -Rain likely, high in the low 50s.
Wednesday – Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain, high in the low 50s.

Marine forecast: Today – East winds to 10 knots, seas around 2 feet.
Outlook: Small craft advisory by Saturday afternoon and possibly gale and storm warnings early next week depending on the track of Sandy..

Enjoy the day!

Cloudy and mild Wednesday with some light rain and drizzle! Watching Sandy!

Clouds will prevail today and at times with drizzle as an onshore flow develops, it will be mild but not as mild as originally thought with highs mainly in the 60s. Still a lot of clouds around on Thursday though we may see a little sunshine. Friday and Saturday should be mainly sunny and milder. Chance of rain and cooler on Sunday..
Now about Sandy, the storm is now just south of Jamaica and will cross that island today and then Eastern Cuba tonight before moving into the Bahamas on Friday. After that the computer models are still far apart on how it will affect our area, for the sixth run in a row the European model (ECMWF) has the storm hitting the Asbury Park area with 150 mph winds very early Tuesday morning while the American model (GFS) has it go safely out to sea. This is a low confidence forecast for a possible high impact event, we should have a better handle on what will happen in a couple of days, stay tuned..

The forecast: Today – Cloudy with some drizzle, high in the mid 60s.
Tonight – Cloudy with a chance of drizzle, low in the mid 50s.

Have a good day!

Clouding up with rain likely, but it will be mild!

Sunshine this morning is giving way to clouds and rain will be moving in by later this morning, most of this rain will be light and should last only till the middle part of this afternoon, after that rain chances decrease, temperatures will be mild. Still a chance of rain Wednesday into early Thursday then we should have dry and sunny weather later this week into the weekend with mild temperatures for late October..
Tropical Storm Sandy has formed south of Jamaica and is expected to cross Cuba into the central Bahamas by Friday, after that the computer models are still not in agreement with the GFS model takes the storm safely out to sea while the ECMWF has it affecting our area with powerful winds and heavy rain early next week.. Stay tuned to this interesting weather event.

The forecast: Today – Cloudy with rain mostly early this afternoon, high in the upper 60s.
Tonight – Cloudy with a chance of rain, low in the low 50s.

A weak front will be approaching the area on Tuesday into Wednesday morning with more clouds and a chance of a shower. Mild and dry weather should prevail during from Thursday through Saturday. Have a nice Sunday!

Some dense fog this morning will burn off to give us a sunny Saturday!

Yesterday we picked up a little over an inch of rain but some spots in northwestern New Jersey received up to three inches of precipitation. The rain has moved offshore but with high dew points and light winds there is considerable dense fog in our area with visibilities close to zero. As a drier air moves in on westerly winds the fog will burn off and today will be sunny with mild temperatures. A few degrees cooler on Sunday before becoming milder again starting Monday with mild temperatures continuing next week, there will be little or no rain most of the week..

The forecast: Today – Fog this morning becoming sunny after 9am, high near 70.
