My blog entry for October 29, 2012 as Hurricane Sandy hits our area: As of 8am this morning Hurricane Sandy was about 300 miles south-southeast of our area and has started to turn northwest toward the New Jersey coast, maximum sustained winds are at 85 MPH with higher gusts. Little or no rain has fallen in Northern New Jersey but South Jersey very heavy rain has already occurred with over three inches reported in Cape May. Top winds so far in our area have ranged 30-35 MPH in gusts while the highest gusts in New Jersey was 50 MPH on Long Beach Island. Conditions will worsen this afternoon and especially this evening as gusts up 80 MPH are quite possible here. The rain in our part of the state will not be all that bad compared to Irene with rainfall totals around 3 inches, so inland flooding should not be much of an issue.. Coastal flooding is already occurring along the New Jersey coast and will get much worse especially the northern New Jersey coast and New York Harbor where record levels are likely with devastating results. As I posted yesterday New York subways may be out of service for up to two weeks. Again in our area the story will be the wind with frequent hurricane gusts later today and tonight causing massive power outages. By Tuesday morning after the storm moves onshore winds will slowly diminish but still gusting to 50 MPH, the rain will taper off to showers and continue through the day and night

Happy 38th birthday to my son and my blog administrator Jared!

Becoming mostly sunny and mild after some morning showers! Rain Thursday into Friday possibly mixing with snow at the higher elevations before ending! Chilly and dry weather for Halloween!

Low pressure will move into our area on Thursday along with some remnents of Hurricane Zeta that will be hitting the Louisiana area again later today. Rain should move into our area Thursday morning and then become heavy at times Thursday afternoon and continue into Friday. Colder air moving in behind the low pressure may cause the rain to mix with snow across higher elevations of northwest New Jersey before ending Friday afternoon.

Halloween will be chilly but dry.

Milder on Sunday but a weak cold front may cause showers in the afternoon and evening.

Chilly and dry weather early next week.

My blog entry for October 28, 2012 as Hurricane Sandy approaches our area: One more day to prepare for one of the worst storms to ever hit this area! This morning Sandy was located about 250 miles to the South-southeast of Cape Hatteras North Carolina moving northward. During the day today the winds will pick up from the northeast but there will be little of no rainfall, gusts can reach 35 MPH by this evening. Heavy rain and with strong damaging winds will begin by mid-morning on Monday, gusts to 55 MPH. Monday night will be the worst part of the storm with gusts possibly as high as 80 MPH with very heavy rain. Sandy is expected to come ashore near Sandy Hook around 10PM Monday night, damaging winds and very heavy rain will persist into Tuesday morning before slowly diminishing on Tuesday afternoon. Please take this storm very seriously, power may be out for several days, coastal flooding is even a bigger concern as the storm surge along the coast will be nearly 8 feet, this kind of surge will devastate our coastal areas, New York City subways may be shut down for one to two weeks. I would just add if people are told to evacuate along our coast as well as coastal areas of New York City should leave, this is much more serious than Irene was last year.. Rainfall of 2-6″ is expected, and with the area having a rather dry summer inland flooding should not be as bad as with Irene. Rain and winds will taper off Tuesday evening with wind gusts down to 40 MPH. Wednesday will be breezy with rain showers and cooler temperatures. Cool and dry the end of next week..

Have a nice day and stay safe and healthy!

Mostly cloudy with near seasonable temperatures today and on Wednesday! Heavy rain likely Thursday afternoon through Friday! Dry and chilly weather for Halloween!

Good morning!

Skies are cloudy and again there is some fog in some parts of the area, temperatures range from the mid 50s in Clifton down to the mid 40s further inland, winds are calm or light westerly.

CLIFTON’S WEATHER SUMMARY FOR OCTOBER 27TH:

AVERAGE HIGH: 60 AVERAGE LOW: 41

RECORD HIGH: 75 – 2010 RECORD LOW: 28 – 1990

YESTERDAY’S HIGH: 55 LOW: 45 PRECIPITATION: .11″

A cold front is passing through the area this morning and we will have drier air moving in today with near seasonable temperatures. Skies will continue to be mostly cloudy.

A weak disturbance will give us a slight chance of a shower Wednesday morning but most areas will remain dry. Skies will start off cloudy but become mostly sunny in the afternoon with again near seasonable temperatures.

The remains of Hurricane Zeta along with a larger low pressure will cause rain mainly from Thursday afternoon through the day on Friday. Rainfall amounts of near 2 – 2.50″ are expected. Cooler air moving in on Friday may cause the rain to mix or change to snow across the higher terrain of northwest New Jersey before ending Friday evening.

The coolest air of the season is likely on Halloween, early morning lows may drop into the upper 20s with daytime highs only in the 40s, however it will be dry.

A weak cold front may touch off a shower Sunday afternoon and evening followed by dry and cool weather for Monday.

My forecast blog from October 27, 2012 as Hurricane Sandy approaches our area: This weekend is the time to prepare for possibly one of the worst storms in our lifetime. Today we may see a break of sunshine with mild temperatures, clouds will increase tonight along with a chance of light showers that will extend into Sunday. Winds and rain will gradually increase Sunday night. At 5am Sandy was downgraded to a tropical storm but don’t let that fool you this tropical storm combining with strong cold front approaching from the west will give us a extremely intense storm as it comes onshore, landfall right now is forecast to be on the New Jersey coast early on Tuesday morning. The strongest winds and heaviest rain will be from Monday morning till Tuesday midday. Hurricane force wind gust to 80 mph will be common over a large area causing widespread power outages . Torrential rains of up to 8 inches are possible, there is a chance that inland flooding will not be as severe as during Hurricane Irene due to the rather dry summer that we have had. Rain and wind will slowly diminish later on Tuesday. Still a chance of showers on Wednesday with some gusty winds but well below damaging levels. The rest of the week will be dry and cool.. This weekend is time to prepare for this unprecedented storm..

Have a nice day and stay safe and healthy!

Cloudy with some occasional light rain or drizzle today! Mainly dry with near seasonable temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday! Heavier rain Thursday night into Friday! Dry and chilly weather for Halloween!

Good morning!

Skies are cloudy across the area early on this Monday morning and there is some fog and drizzle falling. At 5:15 a.m. temperatures ranged from 47 at Clifton down to 39 at High Point. Winds are light from the northeast.

CLIFTON’S ALMANAC FOR OCTOBER 26TH:

AVERAGE HIGH: 60 AVERAGE LOW: 41

RECORD HIGH: 73 – 2010 RECORD LOW 30 – 1987

YESTERDAY’S HIGH: 51 LOW: 42 PRECIPITATION: .13″

Low pressure in the area and a cold front approaching from the west will give us a cloudy day with occasional light rain or drizzle, temperature will be a little milder than yesterday with highs near 60. Rainfall amounts will be less than a tenth of an inch.

Weak high pressure will give us mainly dry weather Tuesday and Wednesday with near seasonable temperatures.

Low pressure approaching from the south and west will likely give us rain, possibly heavy at times, as some of the tropical moisture from the remains of Tropical Storm Zeta moves into our area. Rain is most likely from late Thursday afternoon through Friday.

Dry weather is expected for the weekend. Quite cool on Halloween and slightly milder on Sunday.

THE FORECAST:

TODAY – OCT 26 – Cloudy with occasional light rain or drizzle mainly this morning, high near 60.

TONIGHT – Mostly cloudy, low near 50.

TUESDAY – OCT 27 – Partly sunny, high near 60.

WEDNESDAY – OCT 28 – Partly sunny, high near 60.

THURSDAY – OCT 29 – Cloudy with rain developing by noon, high in the upper 50s.

FRIDAY – OCT 30 – Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain, cool, high only around 50.

HALLOWEEN – OCT 31 – Sunny and cool, high in the low 50s.

SUNDAY – NOV 1 – Sunny, high in the upper 50s.

MARINE FORECAST: A small craft advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. tonight for easterly winds gusting to 25 knots, seas 4-7 feet.

OUTLOOK – No advisories expected Tuesday and Wednesday; advisories possible Thursday and Friday.

Weather history: Here is my post from October 26, 2012. Sandy is moving north after passing the Bahamas, the 5am track of the storm has it coming onshore in the Delmarva area but some of the computer models have it a little further north into Long Island. Regardless of where it comes ashore the storm will affect our area with strong damaging winds, torrential rain and coastal and inland flooding, this is a serious storm and people should start preparing for some extremely bad weather especially from Monday night into Tuesday.

Have a nice day and stay safe and healthy!

Finally a nice sunrise this morning but clouds will increase this afternoon with rain likely tonight into Monday! Showers still possible Tuesday and Wednesday! Heavier rain possible Thursday into Friday!
