Skies are mostly cloudy early on this Wednesday morning and temperatures are milder than the last few morning with 5 a.m. readings ranging from 31 in Clifton down to 12 at Basking Ridge and Pequest. Winds are mainly calm.

High pressure will be moving offshore and today will be a mostly cloudy but milder day as highs reach the low 40s. Tonight will continue to be mostly cloudy to cloudy with temperatures nearly steady in the upper 30s.

A frontal system will give us rain along with continued mild temperatures on Thursday. Rain will continue at night.

The front will move offshore sometime on Friday with colder air moving into our area. Rain will then change to a wintery mix by the afternoon of freezing rain, sleet and snow showers with the precipitation ending by Friday evening. An inch or two of liquid precipitation Thursday into Friday with possibly a half inch of sleet and a tenth of ice so travel may become hazardous Friday afternoon and evening.

Cold high pressure will cause dry conditions along with cold temperatures on the weekend.

Mainly dry weather early next week with near seasonable temperatures. A low pressure is expected to develop offshore but it should stay well to our south and east on Monday.

MONDAY – FEB 7 – Partly sunny, high near 40.

TUESDAY – FEB 8 – Mostly sunny, high in the upper 30s.

MARINE FORECAST: A small craft advisory is in effect till 10 p.m. tonight for high seas, winds northeast around 10 knots, seas 4-5 feet.

OUTLOOK – No advisories expected during the day on Thursday; advisories likely Thursday night through the day on Saturday; advisories still possible for higher seas Saturday night through Sunday.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY 2022.

January’s temperature average 2 degrees below normal and made it the coldest January since 2015. The high temperature was 57 degrees on the 2nd, lowest 6 degrees on the 16th. Precipitation was slightly below normal with 3.14″ accumulating. Snowfall was above normal with 14.1 inches, much higher snow amounts down the shore with Atlantic City having the snowiest January on record.

Skies are mostly clear early on this Tuesday morning and there is a wide range in temperatures as clear skies and light winds have caused the valleys to be colder than the higher elevations. My station here in on the hill is 20 degrees while it is 10 degrees at the Clifton station at Oak Ridge. Inland it is even colder with a temperature of -2 degrees at Sandyston.

RECORD HIGH: 63 – 1989 RECORD LOW: 6 – 2019 (19 inches of snow last year)

Today will be a partly sunny day we should have some increasing high clouds in the afternoon, highs may be a couple of degrees higher than yesterday but still be slightly below normal. High pressure will be over our area.

High pressure will move off the coast on Wednesday and it should be a mostly cloudy day but milder with highs reaching the low 40s.

A frontal system is expected to move into our area on Thursday and move offshore on Friday. Rain will be likely Thursday afternoon into Friday but as colder air filters into our area some of the precipitation will change to snow, sleet and freezing rain before ending on Friday evening.

Arctic high pressure will be in control of our weather over the weekend providing the area with cold temperatures but dry conditions.

A disturbance may cause some precipitation early next week but for the time being we will keep the forecast dry.

Skies are mostly clear early on this Sunday morning and it is quite frigid with temperatures at 5 a.m. ranging from 10 in Clifton down to 1 and Walpack and High Point. Winds are gusty out of the northwest dropping wind chill values down to below zero.

The powerful storm that gave our area snow has moved to the Canadian Maritime area. Total snowfall here was around 5.5″ but many parts of the Jersey Shore received around 18 inches while eastern Long Island and the Boston area got nearly 2 feet of snow. Nantucket reported a 74 mph wind gust.

Today will be much quieter but unseasonably cold with highs only in the 20s, winds will be less than yesterday but still be around 10-15 mph with wind chills mainly in the teens.

Dry weather is expected Monday through Wednesday with highs a little milder each day.

The next system will be a strong cold front that will cross the area Thursday or Friday, at this time rain is likely that may change to snow before ending on Friday.

Next weekend looks to be quite cold again but it should be dry.

Snow is falling over the area early on this Saturday morning and temperatures at 5 a.m. range from 18 in Clifton down to 12 at Vernon. Winds are gusty from the northeast causing drifting of the snow. Accumulations so far look to be around 3-4 inches.

CLIFTON’S ALMANAC FOR JANUARY 29TH:

AVERAGE HIGH: 37 AVERAGE LOW: 22

RECORD HIGH: 68 – 2002 RECORD LOW: -2 – 1977

YESTERDAY’S HIGH: 33 LOW: 26 PRECIPITATION: .10” SNOW: 1.0″

The major winter storm will be moving northeast, snow from this system will gradually taper off by noon and end this afternoon, winds gusting to 35 mph will cause blowing and drifting of the snow. Total accumulations should be around 6-9 inches. It will be quite cold with highs only in the 20s.

Gradual clearing tonight but it will be very cold with lows in the single digits with wind chills below zero. Sunday will be sunny but highs again will be in the 20s with diminishing winds.

Dry weather is expected Monday through Wednesday afternoon with slowly moderating temperatures.

A strong frontal system will likely give us rain Wednesday night through Friday. Highs on Wednesday will be in the 40s and in the low 50s on Thursday. On Friday the cold front will move to our east, highs will be in the morning and drop in the afternoon with possibly the rain changing to snow before ending.
