Skies are cloudy early on this Friday morning and there may be a few flakes of snow falling in parts of the area. Temperatures at 5 a.m. range from 28 in Clifton down to 21 at High Point. Winds are mainly calm.

CLIFTON’S ALMANAC FOR JANUARY 28TH:

Today will be a cloudy day with a few snow showers possible in our area as a cold front approaches our area, highs will be in the 30s.

A powerful winter storm will affect our area late tonight through Saturday morning with snow and winds gusting to 35 mph. Snowfall amounts should be between 4-8 inches with higher amounts possible. Just to our east very heavy snow with strong winds will cause blizzard conditions down the Jersey shore and Long Island where more than 18″ are expected. The snow will taper off and end by Saturday afternoon. Highs on Saturday will only be in the low 20s.

Clearing and very cold on Sunday with morning lows near 10 and highs in the upper 20s.

More tranquil weather is expected next week with a warming trend and the next chance of precipitation will be Wednesday into Thursday but this time it will fall as rain as highs on Thursday should be in the low 50s.

Arctic high pressure will be moving offshore and a southerly flow will bring moderating temperatures this afternoon but it will still be colder than normal.

A coastal storm will develop to our east and move up the coast and intensify. Depending on the track and intensity will determine snow amounts and the computer models are still not in agreement with the American (GFS) model has the storm too far to our east to give us significant snow while most of the other models have the storm closer to the coast which would give us heavier snow. At this time in the Clifton area may receive 4-8 inches of snow with less to our west and more to our east. However it is a tricky forecast so stay tuned for further updates.

Arctic high pressure will be building into our area today giving us sunny skies but with cold temperatures as highs will be mainly in the 20s. Winds will not be that strong coming from the northwest around 5-10 mph.

Very cold tonight with lows dropping to the single digits under clear skies but highs during the day tomorrow will be around five degrees higher than today as the high pressure starts moving offshore.

A weak disturbance from the west will give us a chance of snow during the day on Friday and a strong coastal storm will likely give us snow Friday night into Saturday morning. At the present time the American GFS model has the storm too far to our east to give us heavy snow but the European model is still indicating a heavy snow event for our area. We should have a better idea of the storm’s track by tomorrow morning as better data is ingested into the models. The snow will taper off Saturday afternoon and there is only a chance of snow Saturday evening.

Dry weather is expected Sunday through early next week. Sunday will be quite cold but temperatures will slower moderate Monday and Tuesday.

Today will be milder as temperatures are expected to rise to the low 40s with partly sunny skies. A cold front will cross the area this afternoon and a northwest flow of colder air will move into our area tonight.

Arctic air will be over the area tomorrow through Thursday, highs on Wednesday will be in the 20s and morning lows on Thursday will be in the single digits. Temperatures moderate a bit during the day on Thursday but still remain below normal.

Still watching for a potential coastal storm Friday afternoon through Saturday morning which will give our area a good chance of snow. Right now it looks like the storm will be too far east to give our area significant snowfall but that will probably change so stay tuned for further updates.

The storm will be followed by more cold air Sunday and Monday but our area will be dry.

A cold front will cross the area this morning, temperatures will not rise much with highs mainly in the low 30s, however winds will be rather light.

Milder on Tuesday along with partly sunny skies, there is a slight chance of some flurries early tomorrow morning but most places will remain dry, highs will be near 40.

Cold Arctic air will be with us Wednesday into Thursday. During the day on Wednesday highs will not get out of the 20s and lows Thursday morning may drop down to the single digits.

Then we will be watching for a storm that is expected to rapidly develop offshore. The computer models have shifted a little closer to the coast which would give our area some snow, but we have several days to watch this system and determine the impacts to our area. At the present time our forecast has a low chance of some snow Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Clearing and cold weather is expected on Sunday.
