Our area will be between low pressure well off the New England coast and high pressure to our west. Today will again be a mostly cloudy day there is just a slight chance of some sprinkles or flurries this morning mainly falling further inland. Temperatures will be slightly above normal again with highs in the low 40s.

Very quiet weather for early January with no storms expected and temperatures at or slightly above normal for the next several days. Latest computer models now have the storm on Saturday will be too far offshore to affect our weather.

The storm that gave us the snow and rain yesterday is slowly moving off the New England coast as high pressure to our southwest will build into the area. Skies will remain mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 40s.

Mainly dry through the rest of this week, temperatures will continue to be at or slightly above normal.

Still watching for a potential coastal storm around Saturday, but most computer models have the storm too far offshore to give us any precipitation, but it still has to be watched in case the storm comes closer to our area that is now presently indicated.

A weak low pressure area over the Carolinas will move offshore to our southeast today, precipitation with this system will begin later this morning mainly in the form of rain and snow in our area and mainly snow further inland. The precipitation will continue into tonight. Accumulations of less than an inch is expected in the Clifton area and up to 2-4 inches in parts of northwest New Jersey especially in the higher elevations.

Quiet weather is expected the rest of the week with temperatures at or slightly above normal for early January. A low pressure may form offshore on Saturday, but at this time it should stay far enough away so no precipitation is expected, but it is an area to watch.

Skies are cloudy early on this Saturday morning and there is some drizzle still falling over the area, temperatures range from the mid 30s in Clifton to around 30 further inland, winds are calm or light northerly.

The low pressure that gave us the rain yesterday and overnight is moving away and high pressure will build over the area. Drizzle should end by daybreak and we should see some clearing by this afternoon. It will be mild with highs in the low 50s but winds gusting to 25 mph will make it feel cooler.

Another low pressure will be developing off our coast on Sunday and we should see precipitation move into our area around noon and end around midnight. Mainly rain will fall mixed with snow at times, some minor accumulations are possible mainly across higher elevations to our north and west.

Mainly dry weather the rest of next week with temperatures slightly above normal.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY:

December 2020 – Temperatures averaged 2 degrees above normal. Highest temperature 60 degrees on the 13th, lowest 15 degrees on the 19th. Precipitation was slightly above normal with 4.49″. Snowfall was above normal with 8 inches accumulation with 7.8″ falling on the 15th into the 16th.

2020 – CLIMATE SUMMARY: Temperatures averaged 3.85 degrees above normal which tied 2016 for the warmest year in my 48 years of record keeping; Precipitation was above normal with 55.03″; snowfall was much below normal with only 11.6″ of accumulations.

High pressure will be moving offshore as a storm now located over the southeast states moves toward our area. Rain from this system is expected to move into our area around 5 p.m. and continue into early Saturday morning. The higher elevations to our north and west may have a period of sleet and freezing rain before changing to all rain after midnight as temperatures rise. Rainfall amounts 1/2 to 1″

After the rain ends Saturday morning we should see clearing with quite mild temperatures with highs in the 50s.

Another storm system is expected to develop off the coast on Sunday, rain from this system will develop around noon and end before daybreak on Monday. Again, areas to our north and west may see some frozen precipitation. Rainfall amounts 1/2 to 1″

The rest of next week looks to be mainly dry with temperatures averaging around five degrees above normal.
