The trough that gave us the unseasonably cool day yesterday is moving offshore and we should see some more sunshine today with milder temperatures. There is a low chance of an afternoon or evening shower but most areas will remain dry and it should be a nice day for most outdoor activities.

Mostly sunny and warmer on Monday as a warm front passes through the area.

Very hot and increasingly humid Tuesday and Wednesday with highs well up into the 90s. There will be a chance of late day showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday.

The weather will be unsettled Thursday through the start of next weekend as a front moves slowly through the area along with possible moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa. Showers are likely on Thursday with a good chance of showers Friday and Saturday.

Temperatures are averaging about 10 degrees cooler than this time yesterday with readings at 5 a.m. ranging from 59 in Clifton down to 53 at High Point. Winds are a little brisk out of the northeast.

A weak trough will give us a cloudy day today with some showers. It will be unseasonably cool with highs only in the 60s. Not a good start for the holiday weekend but better than the Memorial Day holiday weekend when highs were only in the 40s.

The trough will move offshore on Sunday and we should see more sunshine and milder temperatures but there will still be a chance of mainly afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms.

Monday will have the best weather of the holiday weekend with plenty of sunshine and seasonably mild temperatures.

The Bermuda high pressure will then dominate our weather for Tuesday and Wednesday giving our area a southwest flow of hot and humid air. Tuesday should be dry but there will be a chance of showers or thunderstorms on Wednesday.

The end of the week will be cooler and we have to watch for some moisture from a cold front approaching from the west along with some effects from the remnants of Hurricane Elsa.

A slow moving cold front with some low pressure disturbances moving along the front will cause cloudy skies today along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms through this evening. High temperatures will be slightly below normal. The humidity will decrease as the day goes on with dew points in the 60s this morning falling to the 50s by tonight.

Saturday will be quite cool with showers likely through Saturday night. High temperature will struggle to reach the 70 degree mark.

Finally more sunshine on Sunday as the front moves offshore and high pressure builds into the area. High temperatures will be slightly below normal. However there is still a low chance of an afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm.

Monday will be the best day of the holiday weekend with plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Hot weather will return for Tuesday and Wednesday along with higher humidity. A cold front will approach the area on Wednesday which will give us a chance of showers.

Not as warm on Thursday with a continued chance of showers.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR JUNE 2021:

This June the temperature averaged 73.7 degrees which made it the warmest June since 2010 and was 3.7 degree above normal. Highest temperature was 99 on the 30th, the lowest, 49 degrees on the 23rd. This June there were 12 days of temperatures 90 degrees or above which was the most for June since I started my records in 1973, the average is 4 such days. Precipitation was slightly below normal with 3.44 inches.

Yesterday’s 99 degree reading was the hottest temperature at my station since July 2, 2018. It was also the highest June temperature since 1988 when it hit 100. At Newark Airport the temperature rose to 103 degrees which was their highest June temperature on record.

Today will be cooler with highs in the 80s but the humidity will remain high as a cold front approaches the area and move offshore tonight. Numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop mainly this afternoon and tonight. Some flash flooding is possible. Area rainfall amounts will be 1-3 inches.

Friday and Saturday will be cooler with slowly decreasing humidity and there still will be a chance of mainly afternoon and evening showers both days.

Sunday and Monday will be mainly dry with warmer temperatures.

Some hot weather will return for Tuesday and Wednesday but at this time the heat will be less intense and not as long as our past heatwave

One day more of excessive heat and humidity as the Bermuda high pressure continues to dominate our weather. High temperatures will again be well up into the 90s and with the humidity will cause heat indexes to rise to near 110. An excessive heat warning is in effect. There is a better chance of late day and early evening showers and thunderstorms with some storms possibly strong to severe.

The Bermuda high pressure will be moving further offshore and a cold front will cross our area Thursday night with showers and thunderstorms with some heavy rain likely. With the clouds and precipitation temperatures will not be as hot, but the humidity will only slowly decrease.

Showers will continue to be likely on Friday with some heavy rain again possible, high temperatures will only rise to the upper 70s.

Some showers are still possible Saturday and Sunday with below normal temperatures.

Monday looks to be the best day of the holiday weekend with more sunshine and seasonably warm temperatures.

Hot weather may return for the middle of next week.
