Skies are mostly clear early on this Sunday morning and it is unseasonably cool again with temperatures ranging from the mid 30s in Clifton down to the low 30s further inland, winds are light out of the southwest.

Note: In Central Park yesterday the temperature dropped to a record 34 degrees which was the coldest so late in the season and also the coldest May temperature since 1891.

After yesterday’s record cold and snow showers today will be milder, but it will still be below normal as high pressure builds toward the area. Skies will start off mostly sunny but we should see an increase in clouds this afternoon.

A weak cold front will give our area a chance of showers on Monday, temperatures will be slightly cooler than today.

Dry weather Tuesday through Thursday but with cool conditions continuing. There may be some frost early Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Finally some warmer air will move into our area on Friday and continue into the weekend although there may be some scattered showers.

MARINE FORECAST: A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m this evening for southwest winds gusting to 25 knots, seas 1-2 feet.

Record breaking cold early on this Saturday morning under mostly fair skies. The temperature here in Clifton at 5:30 a.m has dropped to 32 degrees which is tied with May 4th 1986 as the coldest May temperature on record. Also snow fell before ending early this morning and this tied for the latest snow with May 9th, 1977. No accumulation was recorded here but the higher elevations of northwest New Jersey and inch or two coated the ground. Gusty northwest winds have lowered wind chill values to the low 20s.

The low pressure that gave us the precipitation yesterday was moving off the New England coast as high pressure builds from the west which will cause a gusty northwest flow of unseasonably cold air. Skies will be partly sunny and there is a slight chance of an afternoon shower that may be mixed with tiny ice pellets. Winds will gust over 30 mph at times with wind chills staying in the 30s all day.

After a chilly morning sunshine will cause milder temperatures by Sunday afternoon along with less wind as high pressure builds over the area.

A weak disturbance will give us a chance of showers on Monday.

Dry weather Tuesday through Thursday, temperatures will be below normal except near normal on Thursday.

A warm front may cause some showers late Thursday night into Friday followed by finally some warmer than normal air.

A cold front will cross the area this morning with a low pressure forming on the front will cause skies to become cloudy by noon with rain likely mainly after 2 p.m. and continuing in the evening. As colder air wraps around the intensifying storm some of the precipitation will mix with or change to snow before ending shortly after midnight. Inland mainly across higher elevations of northwest New Jersey may pick up an inch of the white stuff and even some flurries may occur in our area. Rainfall amounts of .50 to .75″ likely. The latest snow has fallen was May 9th 1977.

Saturday will be an unseasonably cold and windy with a chance of some showers in the afternoon, the showers may be mixed with snow inland. Highs will only be around 50 but with winds gusting to 35 mph will produce wind chill values mainly in the 30s.

High pressure building into the area on Sunday will give us mostly sunny skies with somewhat milder temperatures and with less wind.

Another disturbance may touch of some showers on Monday.

Mainly dry Tuesday through the end of the week, temperatures will start off below normal but rise to near normal by the end of the week.

The low pressure area that gave us the light rain yesterday and has moved offshore while weak high pressure builds over the area which will provide our area with plenty of sunshine with pleasantly mild temperatures. A cold front will cross the area with only some clouds late tonight.

An area of low pressure will move along a front to our south on Friday which will cause clouds skies and cool temperatures and rain will develop by the afternoon and continue into the evening. Inland across the higher elevations the rain will mix or change to snow before ending early Saturday morning where even a rare May accumulation may occur. Rainfall amounts will average around 1/2″

Saturday will be a windy and unseasonably chilly day with a chance of some lingering showers. Some wind gusts to 40 mph possible.

Sunday will have less wind along with mostly sunny skies and slightly milder temperatures.

Monday will be cool with a chance of showers.

Dry with still below normal temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.

A pattern change still looks likely toward the end of next week with warmer temperatures.

A weak area of low pressure will be moving offshore south of the area and this will cause cloudy skies with cool temperatures, some light rain is likely this afternoon and evening.

Weak high pressure will then build into our area on Thursday providing mostly sunny conditions with milder temperatures. A cold front should come through our area at night.

Friday will be a cloudy and cool day with some showers as a weak area of low pressure moves to our south, some of these showers may mix with some snow to our north at west Friday night.

Saturday will be windy and unseasonably cool with highs only reaching around 50.

Somewhat milder on Sunday with sunny skies.

Another weak area of low pressure will move into our area on Monday giving our area a chance of showers followed by a dry Tuesday, temperatures will continue to be below normal.

The latest models are indicating a pattern change with warm weather likely after the middle of this month.
